A WINDOW INTO THE TOWN’S HISTORY

 

Brought to life in 1904 by the Great Northern Railroad, Whitefish is a picturesque mountain town with humble beginnings. Many of the buildings downtown have maintained their original character and the railroad still runs straight through it.

Initially known as “Stumptown”, the area’s many trees had to be cut down to make room for the railroad and left a minefield of stumps. (Hence the original “Stumptown Inn” we’ve since renovated.) The name didn’t stick and the stumps were later removed.

Whitefish ski culture spans more than 70 years of cruising down Big Mountain’s powder-covered trails. Now known as Whitefish Mountain Resort, it’s proudly been listed as one of the best overall ski locations in the West for a few years running.

Whitefish is a native fish species, originally pulled from the lake by the town’s original inhabitants, which gave way to its namesake.
